If you're shopping for furniture in the Finger Lakes region, Bassett Home Furnishings in Victor, NY, is a destination worth visiting. Known for customizable sofas, sectionals, and bedroom sets, this store offers quality craftsmanship and personalized service. But with so many options, how do you make the right choice? This guide walks you through everything from fabric selection to delivery, helping you avoid common pitfalls and get the most value for your money.
Why Choose Bassett Home Furnishings Victor NY?
Bassett has been a trusted name in American furniture since 1902. The Victor location is part of a network of independently owned stores that carry Bassett's custom-order program. Unlike big-box retailers, here you can choose your frame, fabric, leg style, and cushion fill. This means your sofa or sectional is built to your exact specifications. The showroom displays dozens of fabric swatches and leather samples, so you can see and feel the materials before ordering. The staff are trained to help you match pieces to your existing decor and lifestyle.
How to Choose the Right Sofa or Sectional
Start by measuring your room. Use painter's tape to outline the sofa's footprint on the floor. Consider traffic flow: leave at least 18 inches between the sofa and coffee table. Next, think about usage. For families with kids or pets, performance fabrics like Crypton or Sunbrella resist stains and wear. For a formal living room, velvet or linen adds elegance. Cushion fill matters: high-resilience foam with a fiber wrap offers a balance of comfort and support. Avoid all-fiber cushions that flatten quickly. Ask the salesperson about the frame construction – kiln-dried hardwood frames with corner blocks are the most durable.
Customization Options and What to Avoid
Bassett's custom program lets you modify almost everything. Popular options include power reclining mechanisms, USB ports in console seats, and adjustable headrests. However, avoid over-customizing on trendy colors or patterns that may look dated in a few years. Stick to neutral base colors and add personality with pillows and throws. Also, be realistic about delivery times – custom orders typically take 8-12 weeks. If you need furniture sooner, ask about quick-ship items that arrive in 2-3 weeks. Don't forget to confirm the return policy: custom orders are non-returnable, so choose wisely.
Common Mistakes When Buying Custom Furniture
One big mistake is not testing the comfort. Sit on the floor model for at least 10 minutes in your usual position. Check seat depth – if you're tall, a deeper seat might be better; if short, a shallower seat prevents your feet from dangling. Another error is forgetting about delivery. Measure doorways, hallways, and stairwells to ensure the furniture can fit inside. Ask if the store offers white-glove delivery (assembly and placement) and if they remove old furniture. Finally, don't skip the fabric protection plan if you have kids or pets – it can save you money on cleaning down the road.
Real Buyer Tips for Bassett Victor NY
Visit on a weekday when the store is less crowded, so you can take your time. Bring photos of your room and a floor plan with measurements. Ask about current sales or financing offers – Bassett often runs promotions like 0% APR for 12 months. Read online reviews of the Victor store specifically; many customers praise the helpful staff and quality, but note that delivery times can vary. If you're on a budget, check the clearance section for floor models or discontinued fabrics. And always get a written quote with all costs itemized, including tax and delivery.
